TAF AFRICA PARTNERS WITH THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR LEGISLATIVE AND DEMOCRATIC STUDIES TO ENTRENCH DISABILITY INCLUSION IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

Director General of the National Institute for Legislative & Democratic Studies (NILDS) Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman received the TAF Africa team, led by the CEO/Founder, Amb. Jake Epelle, on an advocacy visit to seek collaboration in entrenching disability inclusion within the legislative arm of government. After acknowledging what the institute has done so far in terms of disability inclusion, Amb. Epelle presented the key issues and areas of possible collaboration to the Director General, among which are;
  • Joint development of an inclusive curriculum to be mainstreamed in all workshops organized by the Institute.
  • Addition of disability inclusion budget line in the development of the next budget cycle.
  • Partnership with the institute on the deployment of sign language interpreters (SLIs) to the National Assembly.
  • Deployment of a dedicated desk officer on disability inclusion matters.
  • Scale up advocacy at the National Assembly on assessable structures for persons with disabilities.
In response, the Director General, Prof. Abubakar expressly consented to a partnership with TAF Africa in the deployment of sign language interpreters to the National Assembly. He also promised to deploy sign language interpreters to any function organized by the institute, as well as champion the cause of having SLIs at the National Assembly.   Prof. Abubakar restated his commitment toward participatory democracy where no one is left out irrespective of disability status. He pledged to a continuous and productive partnership with TAF Africa in entrenching disability inclusion within the legislature.

On Tuesday, February 4th, 2026, we commenced a 2-day capacity building for journalists and other stakeholders in Delta state on the 2018 Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act.
