On Friday, August 1st, TAF Africa, supported by the EU-SDGN II programme, hosted PWD Legislative Interns who have been interning at the Nigerian National Assembly for the last three months.

The interns (Barrister Festus Ikechukwu Okpeh, Barrister Rex Erameh, Eunice Nwokocha, Shamsiyyah Umar, Honorable Aduku Emmanuel, Alhassan Hussaini, Aver Akighir, Ogundare B. Omowunmi, Angelina, Ugben, ) were deployed to House Committees on Disabilities and Poverty Alleviation, Budget and National Planning, Humanitarian Services and Development, Health Social Development, Education, Transporation, Works and Housing, Communication and Technology, Labour and Employment, and Justice.

The session provided an overview on the experiences of the legislative interns and included a debriefing session which gave the interns an opportunity to present their own reflections that focused on the Key Successes, Challenges encountered, Lessons learned, and Recommendations on the program.

The objective of this workshop is to strengthen the capability of Disability Leaders to advocate for equitable budgetary allocations in line with the Rivers State Disability Law and the Sustainable Development Goals. The workship focused on strategies and best practices to influence Budget priorities through advocacy and engagement, presented by our Senior programme officer George Anwayi Dominic. Participants also delivered a group work on analysing Budget allocations for disability inclusion (sectoral focus -Education, health and social welfare). This session was facilitated by Dr. Igochukwu Wali, Director Budget, River State ministry of Budget and economic planning.

He came to follow up on the implementation status of the European Union in Nigeria Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) recommendations from the 2023 General Elections, particularly on disability inclusion.
