PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY THE EUROPEAN UNION THROUGH ITS SUPPORT TO DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA (EU-SDGN II) PROGRAMME

"Deepening public awareness of the capacity of Persons with Disabilities to lead and govern Nigeria."

BACKGROUND

An inclusive electoral Nigeria starts here.

TAF Africa, with support from the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN II) Programme, is launching the AbleToRun Electability Campaign — a bold, nationwide movement calling Persons with Disabilities to step up as political candidates.

The press conference on May 12 marks the official start: an online and physical campaign, press statements, influencer partnerships, and a two-week social media blitz designed to shift the national conversation on disability and leadership.

WHAT WE AIM TO DO

Campaign Goals

01

Launch National Candidacy Drive

Kick off an online and physical campaign calling Persons with Disabilities across Nigeria to pick up nomination forms and contest political offices at all levels.

02

Drive To Shift Public Acceptance

Encourage broader acceptance of PWD leadership in both public and private sectors — normalising disability as no barrier to governance and public service.

03

Hold Political Parties Accountable

Call on political parties — with and without released nomination numbers — to provide active, concrete support for Persons with Disabilities seeking elected office.

THE CHALLENGE

The gap between policy and reality

Despite meaningful legislative gains, significant implementation gaps persist. Public attitudes still fall far short of policy expectations — leaving Persons with Disabilities perceived as less capable by members of the general public.

This perception gap directly suppresses political participation, both from within the disability community and in terms of public appetite for PWD candidates.

OUR SOLUTION

  • Amplify messaging that invites PWDs to enter political contests
  • Highlight rights-based provisions in party platforms that PWDs can leverage for their political careers
  • Engage media influencers to shift national perception through storytelling
  • Produce and disseminate campaign content across social media over two weeks
  • Hold political parties accountable on inclusive nomination processes

Who this campaign serves

Target beneficiaries

Able2Run is designed for three intersecting groups who each have a critical role to play.

PRIMARY

Persons with Disabilities

PWDs across Nigeria who carry an interest in political office — candidates we are directly calling upon to step forward, declare, and run.

SECONDARY

Electoral & Civil Society Actors

INEC, security agencies, political parties, media organisations, and civil society actors — put on notice to expect and accommodate increased PWD political participation.

TERTIARY

All Nigerians

The Nigerian public at large — whose awareness and acceptance of disability inclusion in politics is essential to lasting, structural change in how leadership is perceived and chosen.
