Our Thematic Areas

Our thematic areas (Education, Human Rights and Access to Justice, Governance, and Social Protection) are the core areas of the work that we do. They define our projects and what we pursue
Through strategic interventions – including our advocacy with the National Population Commission (NPC), the Able to Serve Campaign, the Sightsavers Economic Empowerment Project, and multiple grassroots political participation programs, our engagements have led to the development of disability-inclusive policies, capacity-building programs, and a growing movement of self-advocacy among PwDs.

EDUCATION

Inclusive Education has been internationally recognized as a means of attaining equity, justice, and quality education for all learners, especially those who have been traditionally excluded from mainstream education for reasons of disability, ethnicity, gender, giftedness or other characteristics.

With support from our funders and partners, we provide a range of interventions and multiple enablers under our methodologies, including pursuing legislative and policy changes, teacher training, and advocacy for the adoption of assistive devices to enable learning by learners with disabilities.

Through targeted initiatives, our education awareness and advocacy aims (are aimed) at promoting inclusive education at all levels of learning

ELECTORAL REFORMS

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the rights of PWDs and the need to ensure their full and equal participation in all aspects of society, including politics and elections.

The CRPD, which was adopted tby the United Nations General Assembly in 2006 and ratified by numerous countries, including Nigeria, serves as a crucial international legal framework fthat promotes and protects the rights of PWDs.

The Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 of Nigeria contains important provisions that aim to promote and protect the political participation of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the country. The Electoral Act (2022) also mandates the provision of reasonable accommodations for PWDs to participate in political activities,.

Against these legal backdrops, TAF Africa has consistently rolled out a series of interventions such as PWD Voter Education, Capacity Building for PWD Candidates, an Election observation monitoring dashboard, and an election observer app.

THEMATIC AREA FIVE

GOVERNANCE

Over the years, TAF Africa has led major interventions towards improving the participation of persons with disabilities, by advocating for their inclusion at the political party levels, and with regards to the voting process.

TAF Africa continues to work to increase the accessibility of polling stations for persons with disabilities, the provision of assistive tools and through series of voter education campaigns.

While some achievements have been achieved, especially within the legal framework for elections, challenges still exist in giving effect to the provisions of the law. TAF Africa therefore continues to advocate for the enabling of the rights of persons with disabilities to participate fully and equitably in governance and the electoral process
