TAF Africa’s Nationwide Able2Vote Voter Education Campaign for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Towards #NigeriaDecides2027
Across Delta, Abia, the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Kano, TAF Africa’s #Able2Vote community outreach, implemented under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Programme, took voter education beyond information-sharing to listening. Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and internally displaced persons (IDPs) learnt about their civic and electoral rights, accessible voting procedures, INEC’s assistive devices, misinformation and election safety, and the legal protections that guard their participation. They also shared what it takes to exercise those rights in practice. In Delta and Abia, 559 PWDs across 12 communities showed that having a PVC is only the first step: about 99% held one, yet many still wondered, “Will I be able to use it?” They spoke of inaccessible polling units, costly transportation, inadequate assistive voting materials, limited sign language support, biometric accreditation challenges and inconsistent priority voting. In Nasarawa, PWDs in Lafia, Keffi, Obi, Karu and Doma asked candidates and institutions to ensure that inclusion does not begin and end with the campaign season, and called on INEC and the National Orientation Agency to make electoral and civic information more accessible. In Benue, more than 1,200 IDPs across the Abagena, Mega, Daudu II and Ortese camps made one call clear: bring voting points closer to where displaced citizens now live. Their concerns also covered registration, PVC collection and reliable voting information. Together, these conversations in all seven locations reinforced TAF Africa’s position that the responsibility for inclusion cannot rest with voters alone. Voters should not only be informed of their rights; they should be heard, and what they say should shape what changes.
